Who would you say is the greatest vocalist of all time? I read many lists on the best vocalists, but I want to hear your opinions. For me it's a toss up for either of these guys and girls:

    Freddie Mercury
    David Bowie
    Jeff Buckley
    Tim Buckley
    Layne Staley
    Adele
    Tori Amos
    Elizabeth Fraser
    Chris Cornell

    And more.

    What are your choices?

depends on my mood really, different vocalists, can't classify them all into one bunch. but.

I like Phil Anselmo, Mustaine. I prefer people who don't actually sing, singing annoys me. especially bruce dickenson type stuff.

The greatest vocalist of all time would depend on what context you mean. My favorite singer of all time would be Frank Sinatra, but would I say he has the greatest voice of all time probably not. It all depends on what I'm listening to but here are some of my favorites in their specific genre.

Rock: Robert Plant, Geoff Tate, Bon Scott, Geddy Lee, and Steve Perry

Pop: Prince, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Lana Del Rey

R&B: Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin

    Blues - Son House

Alternative: Kate Bush, Bjork, Iggy Pop, Thom Yorke, Morrissey

If I did have to pick just one vocalist in the world, it would be Prince. I think he's a musical genius. He produced, arranged, composed, sang, and played all 27 instruments on his first album. He also wrote all the songs except for one which he was a co-writer. His vocal range is incredible. The man can do it all.
